The effect of the family-centered AAC intervention for a child with autism spectrum disorder and his family

Abstract
Children with autism spectrum disorders can be faced with many problems due to limited communication abilities. Therefore, interventions for alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) have been suggested to support children with autism and their family members. However, there has been only few researches to report the effectiveness of AAC intervention in family setting. The purpose of this case study is to describe the family-centered AAC intervention for a child with autism spectrum disorder and his family. The procedure of the family-centered AAC intervention consisted of assessment of family¡¯ needs for AAC, the identification of priority communicative contexts at home, AAC device training and implementation at home, and four-step communication partner AAC training. Results obtained from this study were as follows: First, the family-centered AAC intervention increased communication turns and spontaneous speech. Second, the mother and father who participated in the study were satisfied with the AAC device and training. Specially, they experienced the supports during the process of the individualized parents education course. The benefits of the study and specific implications for the future research were discussed.
